Why it matters
Leasing companies and non-bank lenders issue debt in the capital markets to lend to companies. The cost of those issues sets a floor for the credit they offer. Arrendadora Actinver paid 170 basis points over two years with an AA- rating. Earlier this month, Volkswagen Leasing paid 95 basis points over three years with a parent guarantee and an AAA rating. With different tenors, the gap mainly reflects rating and backing.
For a mid-sized company or a developer leasing equipment or machinery, the cost of those issues passes into the rent. More lessors with access to the debt capital markets widen the options, but the price depends on who backs the issuer.
What to review
- How much of your lease rate reflects the lessor’s cost of issuing debt and how much is its margin.
- Whether your contract lets you prepay or buy out the equipment without penalty, like the early redemption option the issuer kept.
- Whether to compare offers from lessors tied to financial groups with those from independent lenders and banks.
At Borax Capital we negotiate funding with banks, development banks and funds, and structure debt placements so companies reach the market with the documentation investors require.
